Wellness Forum and Health Screening at Staten Island Mall
STATEN ISLAND, .Y.Y – As Staten Island’s only community-based commercial bank, Victory State Bank is interested in both the financial and personal health of our friends and neighbors.
With this in mind, we are calling attention to a wellness forum and health screening event to be hosted by Borough President James S. Oddo. The showcasing will take place tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 9 in the Center Court of the Staten Island Mall, New Springville.
The free event is made possible by collaboration with Richmond University Medical Center and Staten Island University Hospital.
Designed to spotlight fitness, health information and healthy living, the event, the HealThySelf Wellness Forum, will feature health screenings, health insurance navigation, stress management techniques, smoking cessation, integrative medicine, nutrition, substance-abuse information and diabetes education.
Demonstrations of fitness trends and family friendly performances with healthy messaging will also take place throughout the day.
The event will also have an outdoor component as the GrowNYC Green Market will hold its seasonal opening that day in the Mall parking lot. Healthy cooking demonstrations by the Port Richmond High School Culinary Institute will be a highlight. The Green Market will be open Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“This forum is designed to introduce people who are interested in changing their lives to health trends and fitness concepts in a relaxed atmosphere,” said Oddo, who explained that he’s not interested in banning junk food, but in educating those who need help changing their lives to do so.
“It’s important for Staten Islanders to see their health care provider at least once a year and discuss their biometrics,” said Dr. Ginny Mantello, director of health and wellness at the Borough President’s Office. “These are your key numbers – indicators of health,” she said.
Such significant numbers include blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), cholesterol and waist circumference. Learning about these indicators and more will be a focal point of the event. There will also be free giveaways.
Other partners who will participate in the event include the JCC, YMCA, NYC Parks ShapeUp, SI Boot Camp, Weight Watchers, Shop Rite, Tackling Youth Substance Abuse, IlluminArt, Susan E. Wagner High School Theatre Department, Sundog Theatre and special thanks to the Staten Island Mall.
